International Women’s Day 2025: Accelerating Action & Honouring the Women Who Inspire Us
To celebrate International Women’s Day on 8th March 2025, we reflect on the incredible impact of women in our lives, our workplaces, and our communities. This year’s theme, "Accelerate Action," challenges us to move beyond words and take real steps towards gender equality, empowerment, and recognition.
At Wainwright & Cummins, we asked our colleagues about the women who inspire them most. The answers were deeply personal—mothers, sisters, daughters, partners, friends, co-workers—women who uplift, support, and push us to be better every day.
It’s a reminder that change starts with appreciation. The women in our lives don’t just influence us personally; they accelerate action in our communities, workplaces, and beyond.
We are based in Brixton, a place rich in history and resilience, we also honour the trailblazing women from our own community who have led the way:
🔹 Claudia Jones (1915–1964) – While closely associated with inspiring the yearly carnival celebrations in Notting Hill, her activism extended into Brixton, where she championed workers’ rights and equality paving the way for cultural and social movements.
🔹 Jean Kent (1921–2013): Born Joan Mildred Field in Brixton, Jean Kent became a celebrated actress during the golden age of British cinema, known for her roles in films like "The Browning Version" and "The Woman in Question."
🔹 Olive Morris (1952–1979) – She co-founded the Brixton Black Women's Group, fighting for housing rights, racial justice, and gender equality. Her legacy continues to inspire social change today.
🔹 Stella Dadzie - An educationalist, writer, and historian, Stella co-founded the Organisation of Women of African and Asian Descent (OWAAD) and was an active member of the Brixton Black Women's Group. Her work has focused on combating racism and sexism in the UK education system.
These women's contributions highlight the diverse ways in which individuals from Brixton have embodied the spirit of purposeful action, enriching both local and broader communities.
One of our colleagues mentioned the song "Thank You Mama" by Sizzla, a powerful tribute to mothers and the role they play in shaping us. It resonates deeply with the theme of recognition and gratitude, and as we reflect on the women who inspire us, it’s a fitting soundtrack to this celebration.
This Thursday, we’re coming together for an IWD Pizza Party 🍕—a moment to celebrate, share stories, and accelerate the action we can take as a team to support gender equality.
