Coronavirus: Are You Worried About Rent Arrears?

  • Posted

Our experienced housing team is here and ready to help you during this difficult period.

Instead of doing a general post, I thought it would be best to focus on an issue that people are facing as a result of the pandemic. We know that due to the Coronavirus many people have lost their jobs and are now relying on social assistance or have been furloughed. Unfortunately, many households are now facing financial difficulties and are struggling to pay the bills, including the rent.

If you are struggling with rent arrears and worried about eviction you will be pleased to know that the Government have placed a ban on evictions until 23rd August 2020. This means that during this time bailiffs cannot evict you and landlords cannot get evictions orders.

If you received a notice of eviction before the outbreak, the eviction cannot be carried out during this period and the court will not be dealing with any eviction hearings until the end of August.

If you are facing financial difficulties as a result of the pandemic, we may be able to help you work with your landlord to consider alternatives to eviction at the end of August.

We have implemented strict social distancing policies in our offices and are not currently accepting face-to-face appointments. However, so that we can still assist you, we are conducting telephone appointments.

I am now working on another blog post addressing disrepair and what repairs a landlord should be carrying out during this period, for more information join us on Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin.
